Review: Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park

Review: Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park

Just outside Bournemouth is the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park. This award winning attraction is one of the last heavy horse centres left in the UK.

We visited in May 2021 to discover more about these wonderful animals. Currently, due to COVID, entry is by pre-booked tickets only, this can be done on their website linked below. Parking is free.

The day is planned out with timed activities that you are welcome to join, and dip in and out of, creating a relaxed atmosphere but with plenty going on. We joined the 10.30am Stable Yard Tour to meet the horses and learn about the heritage. There are timed activities for adults and separate ones aimed at children, including farmyard tours, tractor driving, vintage fairground rides, pet's corner and lots more. Heavy Horse drawn carriage rides are included with admission and not to be missed.

The horses are of course the stars of the show, each with their own personality and story. Abbey Rose, a Suffolk Punch, was a particular delight and we enjoyed helping feed her. You'll get to meet various heavy horses through the day, but there are plenty of other animals waiting to see you also. There are donkeys, alpacas, pigs, turkeys, owls, goats and many other 4 legged friends. We met at least two farm cats that need a mention too.

There is also a wide selection of exhibits and displays to look around including a WWI fields trench display, vintage vehicles, Romany culture exhibits and undercover play barns and further outdoor play equipment.

This May has been a bit of a wash out and the weather was a little wet for our visit but this didn't spoil the day. Many areas are under cover but we recommend suitable footwear as, being farm based, it's a little muddy in places.

We had a morning coffee and also lunch in Smokey Joe's Café. Kitted out in an American country and western style, complete with wagon wheels, barrels and seating in an outside barn, Smokey Joe's Cafe was one of the highlights. The food was tasty and generous in portion. We had a delicious hot pulled pork wrap with fries and onion rings and an excellent ploughman's lunch too.

The Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park is excellent value and easily a whole day out for families, especially those with younger children. Adults will enjoy the history, vintage displays and animals too.
