On Wednesday, 11th December 2024, we were invited to celebrate this historic milestone with a thoughtfully curated afternoon that highlighted the hotel’s timeless charm and its impressive modern transformation. The event was attended by local dignitaries, members of the press, and professionals from Bournemouth’s travel and tourism sector, all of whom gathered to honour the hotel’s legacy. The afternoon entertainment featured a wonderful performance by the choir Sing People Sing, who filled the room with Christmas carols and festive songs, creating a magical atmosphere while we were served a Victorian-inspired afternoon tea. This was also where the heartfelt speeches took place, with Michael Regenhardt, General Manager and a previous owner sharing insights into the property’s rich legacy. Among the historical highlights mentioned was a memorable stay by Winston Churchill during World War II. From one of the hotel’s rooms, he received the life-changing telegram inviting him to become Prime Minister in 1940. After the war, the Highcliff was acquired by international hotelier Auguste Wild. It re-opened in 1946 with the Labour Party Conference, solidifying its status as a venue of national significance.
We were treated to a cocktail-making demonstration and tasting, which was both entertaining and informative. The skilled bartenders showcased signature drinks, giving us a glimpse of the care and creativity that goes into the Highcliff’s renowned hospitality.
As part of the event, I was fortunate to enjoy a complimentary stay in one of the hotel’s spacious and well-appointed rooms. The large, plush bed ensured a restful night, while amenities like a Nespresso machine and luxurious furnishings enhanced the experience. The next morning, breakfast was a highlight—a plentiful buffet featuring a wide array of dishes to satisfy every palate.
The Highcliff Marriott has recently undergone a major refurbishment in 2023, with all 167 rooms receiving a contemporary makeover. This extensive update introduced luxurious fittings, elegant décor, and modern amenities, ensuring the hotel maintains its reputation for premium comfort and style. Whether staying in a sea-view suite or a garden-facing room, guests now enjoy an elevated experience befitting the property’s distinguished heritage.
What makes the Highcliff Marriott truly special is its storied history and unmatched location. Originally built as a luxury Victorian seaside retreat, the hotel has witnessed Bournemouth's transformation into a vibrant resort town. Today, it seamlessly combines historical charm with modern amenities, including its Brasserie Blanc restaurant, which offers exceptional dining with stunning sea views. The landscaped gardens, complete with a wedding gazebo, and its heated outdoor pool are just a few examples of its inviting facilities.
The event was not just a celebration of the hotel’s legacy but also a testament to its ongoing commitment to excellence and hospitality. As I sipped cocktails overlooking the sweeping coastline, I felt the magic that has drawn guests here for over a century.
