The quickest way to the beach form West Cliff
Opened in August 1908 the West Cliff Lift offers a unique form of transport to the award winning beaches.
The West Cliff Railway was opened four months after the East Cliff railway, on 1st August 1908. Although construction of the two lines was undertaken almost concurrently, there are subtle differences in the two systems.
The West Cliff track is slightly shorter in length at 5ft 6inches, the track at West Cliff Railway and the original passenger cars could carry sixteen passengers, as opposed to twelve in the East Cliff cars.
The West Cliff Railway was the first to receive the new aluminium passenger cars in the 1960s.
