Dazzle & The Art of Defence

Event Date: 18 February – 25 April 2019

Following AUB’s collaborative contribution to Dazzle: Disguise and Disruption in War and Art, curated by James Taylor and held at the St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery in Lymington, this major new exhibition contextualises the artist Norman Wilkinson’s First World War ‘Dazzle’ schemes of disruptive camouflage against the wider contribution of the arts and creative industries to the defence of Britain in wartime.

This exhibition explores the work of the WWI Dazzle camouflage artists led by Norman Wilkinson and the roles of the artists, photographers, graphic designers, modelmakers and fashion designers during both World Wars and their influence on contemporary design.

The exhibition was developed from Dazzle: Disguise and Disruption in War and Art held at the St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery in Lymington, in which AUB was an exhibition partner, and reflects on the themes of Dazzle: Continuing the Art of Disruption at the Southampton City Art Gallery.
