Create and learn - open invite to Lighthouse Youth Theatre

Create and learn - open invite to Lighthouse Youth Theatre
A Dorset arts centre is launching its first ever youth theatre with an open call to young people to come and explore their creativity through theatre.

Based at Lighthouse Poole and made possible thanks to funding from Arbor Vitae Foundation, a Dorset-based charity supporting initiatives in education, the arts and health, Lighthouse Youth Theatre will admit its first participants this autumn. They will follow an ambitious programme of learning and performance across three age streams building towards an end-of-year production on stage at Lighthouse.

"We're delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to make, create and get involved in learning how a production develops from the page to the stage," says Martha Earley, Lighthouse Creative Engagement Manager.

"The programme will offer participants access to all that Lighthouse has to offer – from backstage tours and discounted tickets to invitations to open dress rehearsals and preview performances, all aimed at encouraging a lifelong love of theatre and music."

Crucially, Lighthouse Youth Theatre will be open – there is no audition – and will connect with existing learning programmes for Young Technicians, Young Writers and Young Producers. Participants will divide into three age groups – 5-7 years, 8-11 years and 12-15 years – with sessions on Saturdays in term time.

"As well as developing performance skills, these sessions are based on using creativity to build confidence, collaboration and communication skills – and having fun making new friends, of course!" adds Martha.

Lighthouse believes that everyone should have access to creativity and is working to remove barriers by providing bursaries for those struggling with cost, ensuring the space and activities are accessible, and offering accessible application routes.

"We are delighted to support the launch of Lighthouse Youth Theatre, our first major grant as a Foundation," says Linda Cartwright, Chair-trustee, Arbor Vitae Foundation. "By funding bursaries alongside the programme, we hope to ensure that talented young people from all backgrounds have the opportunity to take part and thrive, and to help establish a programme that can grow and sustain itself over time."

Research carried out by Youth Theatre Arts indicates that participation in youth theatre increases confidence, enhances emotional intelligence, boosts resilience, improves teamwork and leadership, promotes better emotional wellbeing and broadens horizons.

"At a time when young people's lives are increasingly screen-based, Lighthouse Youth Theatre offers opportunities for real life connection and creativity," adds Martha Earley. "Whether participants hope to pursue drama, or just take part for enjoyment, there will be a focus on the host of transferable skills that will benefit young people throughout their lives."

Applications to participate in Lighthouse Youth Theatre are open now.
