The Bournemouth Air Festival: Highs, Lows, and the Horizon
For nearly two decades, the Bournemouth Air Festival has been the crown jewel of the South Coast's summer calendar. Known for transforming the 1.5-mile stretch between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers into a natural "amphitheatre of the bay," it has attracted over 10 million visitors since its inception.
However, as of early 2026, the festival finds itself at a critical crossroads, moving from a council-funded staple to a community-led survival effort.

A Brief History: From 2008 to Modern Day
The festival launched in 2008, quickly establishing itself as the UK’s largest free aviation event. It was more than just a flight show; it was a multi-service event featuring the Royal Navy, RAF, and Army.
Key milestones include:
- 2010: The introduction of "Night Air," featuring dusk displays with pyrotechnics and LED-lit aircraft.
- 2011: A year of resilience following the loss of Red Arrows pilot Flt Lt Jon Egging. The festival now supports the Jon Egging Trust in his memory.
- 2015: The final appearance of the iconic Avro Vulcan, drawing record-breaking crowds.
Recent Displays (2024 Recap)
The 2024 festival was a bittersweet event. Spanning three days instead of the usual four, it was the final year funded by the BCP (Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole) Council. Key highlights included:
- The RAF Typhoon: Delivering thunderous solo displays and evening pyrotechnic flights.
- Swedish Air Force Historic Flight: Showcasing the unique Saab Draken and Viggen jets.
- Battle of Britain Memorial Flight: Led by the majestic Avro Lancaster.
- The Red Devils: Precision parachute drops onto the beach.
The Future: 2026 and 2027 Chances
The festival is currently on a "pause" as BCP Council has officially ceased all funding to protect public budgets. For the event to return, it must transition to a fully commercial or community-funded model.
2026 Outlook
While there is no official council event, independent organizers have proposed a revival for August 20–23, 2026. However, the event is contingent on raising 100% of the budget through "Air Cards" and private sponsorship. We'll share more information as it arrives.
2027 Outlook
There is a growing movement for a 2027 relaunch. Crowdfunding campaigns and "Save Our Show" initiatives are currently active, aiming to secure enough funds to book the Red Arrows and manage significant security costs.
