Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, is looking for an innovative graffiti artist to create a piece of art on a key wall within the venue.

This commission forms part of Breakin’ Convention, a national touring project celebrating UK hip hop dance and theatre culture that will take over at Lighthouse on Saturday 9 May.

The work should embody themes of hip hop, dance, theatre and performing arts and be suitable for a public-facing building, accessed by people of all ages.

“More than 200,000 people visit Lighthouse every year to be part of an audience and the artwork will remain in the building for up to six months, giving the artist and their work a great deal of exposure,” says Perdie Bargh, Lighthouse Creative Engagement Officer.

The deadline for submissions is Monday 16 March 2020 at 5pm and the artist to be available on Monday 4 May to produce the piece. The work will need to be completed on this day.

Lighthouse is happy to accept alternative formats for the application stage – by written submission, email, film, or any other approach that suitably explains the idea.

“We are looking to get a clear sense of the idea you would like to deliver, your style of work and some sense of the work you have produced before, including examples of your work,” adds Perdie.  “We are particularly interested in artwork that is inspired not only by the themes of hip hop and dance, but also takes into consideration the huge diversity of artwork that Lighthouse presents on our stages, screens and galleries.”

The piece should be no larger than 3.9 metres by 2.15 metres and the chosen artists will be awarded £500 to cover up to two days’ work and any material costs and a free ticket to Breakin’ Convention tom include access to workshops, shows and talks.
