Pavilion Dance South West Autumn Season 2016

Pavilion Dance South West Autumn Season 2016

Pavilion Dance South West is returning to its Bournemouth venue, Pavilion Dance, for it's autumn season, 17 September to 18 December 2016.

The programme features a strong line-up of leading dance companies, presenting not only a variety of dance styles but also a strong element of storytelling. Several performances in the autumn are re-interpretations of familiar themes from literature and fairytales, and audiences can expect an exciting new take on stories they think they know, from a variation on Dickens’ Oliver Twist (Fagin’s Twist by Avant Garde Dance Company) and a new interpretation of Melville’s Moby Dick (Leviathan by James Wilton Dance) to a twisted new version of Little Red Riding Hood (RED by Mischief Dance; Hatch & Scratch) or dance inspired by Jeff VanderMeer (Bloom by James Finnemore; Hatch & Scratch) and T.S. Eliot (Burnt Norton by Richard Chappell Dance; PDSW Introduces...).

Artistic Director Deryck Newland comments, “We are delighted that, as a National Dance Development Organisation, we are able to bring some of the most exciting and explosive dance companies in the UK to Bournemouth. You don't need to go to Brighton, Bristol or London to see great contemporary performance anymore! What's more, we are actively involved with supporting the creation of some of the work that we show. Pavilion Dance South West are co-commissioners of Avant Garde's Fagin's Twist, which we present on 22nd and 23rd September.” He adds, “We are committed to supporting dance makers to test new ideas and to developing opportunities for emerging South West choreographers. To this end we are delighted that our season includes another edition of Hatch & Scratch, for audiences to feed ideas into work in development, and a new annual feature, PDSW Introduces..., featuring three promising artists from our region.”

The season also features a programme of professional Family Performances, starting with The Nodines by Rick Nodine and Simonetta Alessandrini, which introduces us to a family of dancers. The Adventures Of the Little Ghost by Sophie Nüzel is based on Ottfried Preussler’s popular children’s book of the same title. 2+1 by Tara Pilbrow explores the highs and lows of early parenthood while Wriggle Dance Theatre’s The Colour Of Me delves into the world of colours and emotions.

On Screen, live and recorded screenings of the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet feature ballet classics such as The Nutcracker as well as productions that are rarely seen in the West, such as the two Shostakovich ballets The Golden Age and The Bright Stream.

Pavilion Dance South West is also part of Purbeck Film Festival’s 25th anniversary with a red carpet screening of Carmen, part of Carlos Saura’s Flamenco film trilogy.

In recognition of the International Day of Older Persons we celebrate mature dancers in our Joie de Vivre platform on 9 October with an open workshop and a performance featuring Company of Elders (Sadler’s Wells), PRIME (Scotland), Patricia Glynn (Ireland) and YAMA Dance (SW England). For young people the season offers opportunities to explore career opportunities in the dance industry as well as Supercharged half term fun.
