The Skinny Kitchen Review

The Skinny Kitchen Review

Bournemouth is home to a new healthy eating offering in the form of the Skinny Kitchen.

Opened in March 2016 and located in the centre of town on Post Office Road, Skinny Kitchen seems to offer the dream combination of tasty food with a healthy outlook. We were keen to check out the new venue and went along on a Saturday for lunch. The unassuming front leads you straight in to the seating area. A large banquette runs along the length of the restaurant and there is a choice of tables for couples and groups.

The friendly staff were quick to bring over the menus. Now, these might be a little intimidating at first. At 16 pages it does not make for a quick read, however the lush images used give an indication of the food to come and the is a wealth of nutritional information. The menu offers low carb, healthy, homemade meals, low calorie cocktails, detox smoothies and protein shakes. The front of the menu tells you a little behind the ethos of the restaurant and the menu is split into groups such as 'Muscle up' meals high in protein, helping you build and repair muscle. Then there's 'Get Lean' meals that are low to zero carb. There are also gluten free, fully vegetarian and vegan options too.

We decided to go for mains of Protein and Flax Seed Waffles and a Spinach Egg Pot with Halloumi. The waffles had a wonderful texture and came served with scrambled eggs and bacon topped with maple syrup (but not too much!). The egg pot came served in a hot skillet, the eggs topping a spicy mix of spinach, roasted sweet potato, tomato, smoked paprika and chilli + a very generous portion of griddled halloumi. The halloumi was some of the best we've had outside Greece; salty and tasty, bouncy without being plasticy.

There is a range of protein shakes on offer and we tried a fruity concoction and a chocolately shake also, both served with chunks of banana on the side. The shakes were quite small but packed with good stuff. They were also rather pricey compared to the mains which were relatively inexpensive.

The total for our lunch for two was £24.25, they offer receipt by email which is a great way of tracking your spending (and calorie count).

We're not particularly health conscious and just picked items from the menu we fancied, and weren't left hungry or craving chips. The mix of flavours and textures were spot on and we'll definitely be heading back to try some more from the menu.
