Chaplin's in Boscombe - Lunch Review

Chaplin's in Boscombe - Lunch Review

Chaplin's and The Cellar Bar in Boscombe is an award winning venue and reminded us of a certain somewhere. On a recent trip to Budapest we discovered their love of Ruin Bars, particularly Szimpla Kert. With an eclectic mix of arts, music, food and drink, it's evocative and full of character based in an old building with lots of kooky corners in which to relax and all manner of quirky bric-a-brac strung up on the walls and ceiling. While soaking up the atmosphere and the local Unicum we thought it would be great if Bournemouth had something similar. Well no need to dust off the passport, we've got a venue in its ilk right here in Bournemouth. Chaplin's shares many of the qualities that make the crowds descend on Szimpla Kert.

We went along to try their lunch offering on a wonderful sunny Saturday in April. The interior is a visual treat with so much to take in, much related to Charlie Chaplin and early cinema. Friendly staff offered us a table and brought us menus and a jug of water (please note every other eatery that doesn't - free water for the table is the quickest way to win friends). The menu offers a range of burgers, wraps, jackets and other mains. Despite an excellent beer and burger for £10 deal, we couldn't resist the Club Sandwich and a had a craving for a salmon bagel. The Club Sandwich is a thing of beauty and has a free-range chicken breast fillet, streaky bacon, egg, rocket, garlic mayo in a hearty sour-dough bloomer. It's huge, and tasty, and did we mention huge! The bagel was a more standard size but loaded with smoked salmon and a dill infused cream cheese. Delicious. Both mains came with a small portion of hand-cut chips. Our lunch was delivered in good time and with the petite kitchen just about on view we knew it was all hand crafted fresh.

Chaplin's has variety of Real Ales from Dorset and Hampshire and source the ales from over 20 local breweries as well as guest ales from further afield. They have three gravity pour barrels as well as hand pulled ales on at any time. On our waitresses recommendation we tried a surprisingly pale cider with a wonderful flavour and unexpected 7.5% alcoholic kick. To go with the salmon we tried a Kirin Ichiban Shibori Lager which went well. They have a full range of cocktails too.

We decided to finish our drinks in the sun on the upper deck seating area in the garden at the back. It's a great space with giant murals, stained glass, a waterfall leading down to the Cellar Bar and all interspersed with gorgeous plants and flowers.

Chaplin's has live entertainment every night of the week. The variety on offer ranges and you'll have to check their website to see what tickles your fancy. There's jazz on offer, Northern Soul, indie, classic rock, open mic nights, comedy and lots more.

There's a relaxed but professional atmosphere at Chaplin's, the staff clearly know what they're doing and it's easy to see why it's won 'Best Community Pub UK' amongst other awards.

Our lunch with drinks for two came to £24.75.

This was a unsolicited review, we paid for our meal.
